Pontoon Boat Maintenance Tips for New Owners

Blue Viaggio pontoon boat with Mercury engine on water.

Owning a pontoon is one of the best ways to enjoy time on the water — and taking care of it doesn’t have to be complicated. A little regular maintenance can go a long way in keeping your boat clean, reliable, and ready for summer fun. If you’re a new pontoon owner, don’t worry — we’ve put together a few practical tips to help you stay ahead of wear and tear and enjoy stress-free boating on Atwood Lake.

Benefits of Regular Maintenance on Your Pontoon or Boat

Routine maintenance helps prevent unexpected issues, keeps your pontoon running smoothly, and preserves your investment for years to come. It’s the easiest way to save money, avoid breakdowns, and keep your family safe on the water.

Key benefits of regular maintenance:

  • Helps avoid major (and expensive) repairs
  • Preserves resale or trade-in value
  • Ensures safe operation throughout the season
  • Extends the life of your motor, battery, and canvas

1. Keep Your Pontoon or Boat Clean

Clean boats last longer and look better. While a rinse after every outing isn’t always necessary for freshwater like Atwood Lake, regular cleaning is still key.

  • Wipe down seating and flooring every few outings to prevent mildew and grime buildup
  • Use marine-safe cleaners on upholstery and railings
  • Clean your pontoons (the tubes) at the end of the season with a professional-grade aluminum cleaner to remove algae and scum
  • Let your canvas fully dry before storage to prevent mold and mildew

2. Use the Right Fuel (Always)

We strongly recommend using Rec Blend marine fuel, which is ethanol-free and available at both Atwood Lake Boats locations. Ethanol can cause fuel system damage and moisture buildup — especially harmful for pontoons that sit between outings.

  • Avoid standard gas station pump fuel
  • Always fill up at a certified marine pump using Rec Blend
  • Use fuel stabilizer during winterization or extended storage

3. Protect and Understand Your Battery

Dead batteries are one of the most common frustrations for new pontoon owners at Atwood Lake — and they usually happen for two reasons:

  1. Low horsepower = low charging output. Most pontoons on Atwood Lake are limited to 25HP, so their engines don’t recharge the battery like a car alternator would.
  2. Lots of power use, little run time. Many owners cruise a short distance, then anchor at Boaters Beach for hours — running lights, radios, and accessories the whole time. The battery drains without ever being recharged.

Tips to prevent a dead battery:

  • Install a battery shut-off switch (available in single or dual configurations) so you can shut down the electrical system completely when putting the boat away — no need to worry if you left something on.
  • Consider a dual battery system if you use your radio, lights, or accessories heavily while anchored.
  • While shore charging is great when available, not all docks have power access — so proactive charging and battery management are essential.

4. Maintain Your Engine and Safety Gear

Even smaller engines need regular TLC. Stay ahead of mechanical issues and safety risks with these basic checks:

  • Schedule annual engine service for oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections
  • Clear weeds or debris from the prop area after each use
  • Test your horn, lights, and bilge pump regularly
  • Keep safety gear onboard and up to date (life jackets, throw cushions, extinguisher, etc.)

5. Let the Pros Handle the Big Stuff

While DIY basics go a long way, it’s smart to let professionals handle seasonal maintenance and complex issues.

  • Spring Commissioning – Battery check, fluid top-off, engine run-up
  • Fall Winterization – Engine protection, shrink wrapping, and tube cleaning
  • Mid-season Checkups – Especially before long weekends or vacations
  • Ask about our fall service packages that bundle the essentials and save you time
